Sand paper rolls for general sanding purposes The grit of sand paper is a rating of the size of abrasive materials on the sandpaper. The higher grit number is equivalent to a finer abrasive, which creates a smoother surface. Originaly based on abrasive dots per square inch. Lower grit numbers represent coarser abrasives that scrape off materials much quicker. Matting a surface refers to removing the sheen from the surface – usually with a finer (higher) grit sand paper.
